Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam

The longest short of the DC Showcase, Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam serves as both an origin story for Shazam/Captain Marvel and a chance for him to duke it out alongside Superman. When Black Adam comes to claim the wizard Shazam’s new apprentice, he gets in Superman’s way. But young Billy Batson soon gains his true powers and joins in to stop Adam. It ends up being an epic battle between three incredibly similar, but all powerful, superbeings.Less than thirty minutes long but incredibly well animated, this one has a lot of heart and tons of action. My favourite moment is when Shazam hits Black Adam so hard that it sends shockwaves through his body and cracks the concrete below him. That’s a superhero moment to me. I was very stricken by the great sound design as well, it’s got a real heft to it.

It’s really too bad this is not a feature film, but perhaps we’ll see Captain Marvel return for an encore someday.
